The Trans-Taiga Road

February 12th, 2011 No comments

ok… I have to include this one… Last December I made a serious attempt at it, pharm only to be defeated by snowstorms in West Virginia (a story for another day). Anyway, this particular KFC should hold a special place in any fans heart... Hey, we all need our vices 🙂
This is as far as one can drive from any town in North America.... VERY remote, symptoms yet perfectly drivable... lots of people even do it on bicycles..

The Mother of all Colonels…

February 6th, 2011 No comments

>As someone who spends far too much time just staring at the night sky, I find this picture absolutely fascinating... taken from the Mercury Messenger Mission it is a clear view (from a mere 193m km away) of EARTH and the MOON !!!!!!

Kind of puts everything into perspective, doesn't it 🙂

Where Norway, Finland and Russia Meet

February 3rd, 2011 No comments

It takes about an hour to hike to this tripoint of Norway, Finland and Russia from the nearest road in Norway. Even though it's completely undefended, there is a heavy fine for circling the marker or simply crossing onto Russian soil.

This would be a great side trip on the way to Murmansk 😉

Kingman Reef

February 1st, 2011 No comments

Located literally in the middle of nowhere (ok, about 1500km SouthWest of Hawaii) the Kingman Reef is one worlds most obscure and difficult places to reach. For about 1/2 the year the tides keep the entire reef under water... but someday I'd really like to stand on it 🙂

Someday, this will all change, so I'd really like to see the cement line from both sides real soon 🙂 ...

The Root Bridges of Cherrapunji

January 30th, 2011 No comments

I think these bridges, story located near Cherrapunji, site India… are beyond cool. They are created by “guiding” roots of rubber trees to cross from one side of a river to another. Each one takes about 15 years to grow, and can last 500 years or longer, continually becoming stronger!

This is one of wettest places on earth, and I MUST walk across them someday!
